- In this Photoshop tutorial you may find useful tips which can help you to create well blended photo manipulation with some painted elements. This tutorial is written for users who know basic Photoshop tools and settings and who able to work with the medium/advanced difficulty level tutorials. It doesn't contain very detailed description for actions such as "how to create adjustment layer", "how to separate elements from background" and some others, because of big amount of steps.
- Here is the announcing animation with the all stages described in the tutorial:
- Create a new Photoshop document 8 x 10 in and resolution 300 pixels/in.
- Fill the first layer with the blue color #516989.
- Insert Sky photo above the blue background.
- Add Layer Mask to the sky image and erase bottom edge of the sky photo with the round soft brush.
- Add adjustment layers above the sky layer: Selective Color, Color Balance, Levels.
- Here are the settings for the adjustment layers.
- Selective Color:
- Color Balance and Levels:
- Insert land image, erase the original sky area of this layer. I used Filter > Extract option.
- Add Selective Color adjustment layer. Convert this layer to "Clipping Mask" in order to apply settings only to the land layer.
- Adjustment "Selective Color" layer settings:
- Correct the adjustment layers effects visibility in order to apply adjustment layers settings only for areas where they are needed. For example, Selective Color adjustments make image darker but we need to save some light areas.
- To keep light colors in the center top part of landscape (below lightest spot of the sky), process adjustment layer mask with the soft and translucent brush in the marked area.
- Return to the Sky layer, duplicate it. Place duplicate above the land layer and convert it into "Clipping Mask". Move "sky clipping mask" down in order to cover land area.
- Apply Multiply Blending Mode and Opacity around 80%
- Process the Layer Mask of this layer with the soft brush in order to clean up the top center part of the land from the dark sky shades.
- Add Levels adjustment layer/clipping mask. Leave visible only very top part of the land area for this layer.
- Here are the settings for the Levels layer:
- Create a new empty layer and insert the cloud:
- Add the Layer Mask and fill the top right corner of the mask with the black and white linear gradient.
- Add adjustment layer/clipping mask "Selective Color" to the cloud layer.
- Use settings from screen shot below:
- Duplicate Sky layer again. Put it above the cloud and convert it into the clipping mask. Apply Gaussian Blur filter (~10) to it, Color Blending Mode and Opacity 30%.
- To make cloud more contrast, create Levels adjustment layer/clipping mask.
- Use these settings
- Make created adjustment layer visible in the bottom part of the cloud and in some front areas of the cloud.
- In order to make the top part of cloud darker (closer to the dark sky background), add another Levels adjustment layer/clipping mask with following settings:
- The last Levels adjustment layer should be visible only in the top part of the cloud:
- Insert crescent image.
- Add "Inner Shadow" layer style effect to this layer.
- Erase some areas of the crescent to create clouds covering effect.
- Choose Photoshop preset "texture 6" brush, you may find this brush here, use white or light blue shades color.
- Create a new layer, apply Overlay Blending Mode to this layer, load selection for the crescent an process edges with the texture brush.
- Here is the result of applying texture brush:
- In order to paint cloud curls, create a new layer, download brushes and use translucent clouds brushes. In order to find the right color easily, do not change the tool, keep the brush and use command alt + click to take right shade from the cloud area.
- Here is the result of using cloud brush:
- Use soft cloud brush for smooth areas.
- Here is the result of using soft cloud brush. Play with brush Opacity settings to get smoother curls:
- Insert Christmas trees image:
- Apply Selective Color adjustment layer/clipping mask to this layer:
- Use settings from screen shots below:
- Create a new empty layer. Choose "trees top brush".
- First, draw the dark blue side of curls. Move brush from center/trunk area to outside. Then chose a little lighter brush for area between shade and light. Use light color to draw the light side of branches.
- In order to create curled branches around the landscape choose small round brush (3 - 5 px) 100% Opacity.
- Apply following layer style effects to the curled trees:
- You may add more dark green fir needles to the trees by using the "pine brush". But first, set foreground and background colors. The foreground color should be similar to the light shades of the original trees and background color should be similar to dark shades of the trees.
- Use "snow brush" to cover the trees with the snow. Use very light shade of blue for the left side of the snow cover and little darker shade for the right side.
- Select a small part of the large cloud with the Lasso Tool, in order to copy cloud area including all settings and adjustment layers go to Edit > Copy Merged. paste selected area into a new layer above the crescent. You may correct small cloud shape using Liquify filter.
- Insert sheep head.
- Add Gradient Map Adjustment layer/clipping mask to the head layer.
- For the gradient map use the colors similar to colors around the "cloud sheep".
- Use soft translucent brush (opacity ~30%) to draw body shapes.
- Use clouds brushes to add some curls.
- Use the similar actions to create second and all other animals.
- Add Gradient Map Adjustment layer above all created layers
- Use very bright and light colors for the Gradient map:
- First, fill adjustment layer mask with the black color, then process with the small translucent brush to create bright reflections:
- Here is the selection of these areas:
- Insert Fireworks image above. Actually I duplicated this layer and reflected it horizontally and vertically. Then I merged two layers in center part. One duplicate is covering another a little bit.
- In order to apply arc transformation, go to Edit > Transform > Warp > Arc.
- Apply Screen Blending Mode to this layer:
- Add layer mask to this layer and process some areas with the soft translucent brush to make some areas less shiny or erase stars from the clouds and animals.
- Add Hue/Saturation adjustment layer/clipping mask to correct stars color.
- Here are the settings for the adjustment layer:
- In order to remove white light shade from stars background and make them more contrast apply levels adjustment layer:
- Here are the Levels adjustment layer:
- Finally, add some warm shades/reflections to the whole scene.
- Create Selective Color adjustment layer. Then fill adjustment layer mask with the Reflected gradient:
- Selective Color settings:
And here is the result!
